The agency says its workers are screened. Good. That sentence is a claim until it sits in the paperwork you sign, next to the rate and the exit terms. Ask for the screening terms in writing before anyone walks into the house.

Local option: New Plan Care gives families in the St. Louis area in-home help so a parent can stay home: companionship, help with bathing and dressing, meals, and overnight care. Call (314) 405-0887.

Ask for the check list, not the promise

Ask the agency to name each check it runs. A general line that says background checks are done tells you nothing. A written list tells you what was looked at. Ask whether the list covers criminal history, identity confirmation, reference calls, and any state registry the agency is required to check. If the agency holds a state license or registration, ask which requirements that license covers and which ones the agency handles on its own.

Ask whether each check is finished before the first visit. Then ask for proof that it was completed for the specific person sent to your home. A check on file for the company is not the same as a check on the worker at your door.

Ask how the checks are repeated

A screening that was done once and never repeated is a snapshot. Ask how often each check is run again and who tracks the renewal timing. Write down the answer. If the agency says it repeats checks but cannot say how, record that gap.

Ask what happens when a check fails

Ask three things in writing. Will you be told if a worker's check comes back with a problem? Will that worker be removed from your home, and how quickly? Who decides whether the worker can return to any client? A serious agency will have plain answers. A vague answer is a finding.

Put the terms next to the quote

Once the screening terms are on paper, read them alongside the quote and the contract. The quote shows what you pay for. The contract shows what the agency owes you. The screening section belongs in the contract, not in a brochure. If you want a line-by-line walk through a quote, the guide on how to read a home care quote covers the lines to check.

What silence tells you

If an agency will say its staff is screened but will not put the checks in writing, record that as a finding. Note when you asked and the exact words used. Do not sign a contract that treats the screening as a policy the agency can change without telling you.
