A caregiver should not reach your door until a chain of checks has been completed, recorded, and signed off. You can ask an agency to show you each link. If it cannot, that is your finding.

Local option: New Plan Care gives families in the St. Louis area in-home help so a parent can stay home: companionship, help with bathing and dressing, meals, and overnight care. Call (314) 405-0887.

The checklist, in order

Request on file. The agency logs what you asked for and who on the family side approved it. The request should have its own written record.

Identity confirmed. The caregiver's government photo ID is checked against the name on the file, and the agency keeps a record that the check happened.

Background check named. Ask which record checks the agency runs, how far back they reach, who reads the results, and whether the check is repeated on a schedule or only once at hire.

References called. Ask who makes the reference call, whether notes are kept, and whether the agency will tell you when a reference declined to speak.

Training recorded. Ask for the list of training topics, such as emergency calls, reporting rules, and privacy. Check that the list is written down, not just spoken.

Sign-off named. One person at the agency approves the caregiver before the first shift. Get that person's name and the way to reach them.

File location stated. Ask where the caregiver's file lives, who can read it, and how you can request a copy of the parts that concern your household.

What to do with gaps

If an agency cannot show a step, do not accept a spoken promise that it happens. Ask for the step in writing. If the answer is still silence, record the missing link on your sheet and let it count against the agency.

Keep the screening path separate from health questions. Health questions go to the family's doctor, not to the screening desk, and a screening answer is not a health answer.

Keep your own copy of the checks

Write the six links on one page, leave space beside each, and fill in the name, the day, and the document you received. That page is your proof of the path. It is also the page you will hand to any new caregiver who joins the household later.
